WorkSafe ACT to Issue Spot Fines for Work From Height Breaches

WorkSafe Act now has the power to issue on-the-spot fines of up to $3600 to employers who compromise workers’ safety when working from heights.

Work from height safety has become a major area of concern and in the 2017-2018 period there were 72 workers compensation claims in the state for falls from height. This was in addition to a number of near-misses where safety precautions were inadequate.

WorkSafe ACT now has greater powers to enforce safety requirements and hopefully prevent injuries. It will also serve as a warning to the industry that safety should always be the priority, WorkSafe said.

Any employer that fails to comply with their obligations in relation to providing a safe workplace by preventing falls will be committing an offence under the Work Health and Safety Regulation (sections 79 and 80).
