Fly-in fly-out workers have long been an ‘at-risk’ sector of the workforce and WA is finally doing something about.
WA has launched Australia’s first code of practice addressing FIFO workers’ mental health in resources and construction sectors.
The code aims to address hazards and risk factors in FIFO workplaces following government-funded research in 2018 that found FIFO workers experienced higher levels of psychological distress than their non-FIFO counterparts.
The code encourages employers to adopt a risk management process that identifies potential hazards to mental health and establish a workplace culture that is positive and supportive. Organisations are also expected to provide suitable accommodation and schedule work with enough time for rest and recreation.
