Western Australia recently implemented tougher penalties for workplace safety offences, which are consistent with the national model Work Health and Safety Act.
The laws introduced increase the maximum imprisonment term from 2 to 5 years and fines for body corporate are also higher.
Under the changes level 4 offences now attract a maximum $2.7 million penalty for first offenders and $3.5 million for subsequent offenders. Previously it was $500,000 for first time offenders and $625,000 for subsequent offences, so the increase is quite substantial.
