Time-Saving Construction Method Probed

A study by American bridge engineering experts found that America’s bridges were crumbling and many more were needed,so experts designed an advanced technique called Accelerated Bridge Construction to speed up the process of bridge construction. This method involved building bridges off-site and moving them to their final location where they were put together.

The process was put to the test recently in Florida, where a 53 metre, 950 tonne pedestrian bridge was installed. Unfortunately the bridge did not withstand the week, collapsing onto passing traffic below, killing up to 6 people and injuring 9 others.

Investigations have been launched into the cause of the collapse and whether the new construction techniques contributed to or caused the collapse.
