Summer Safety Tips for Outdoor Workers

Summer is finally here and while it’s a time for fun in the sun, for those of us who work predominantly outdoors, there is an increased risk of heat-related illnesses which we should prepare for.

Heat stress and heat stroke are just 2 possible consequences of working outdoors and in 80 per cent of cases, heat stroke is fatal.

If you work in an extremely hot environment, you could be losing up to one litre of fluids every hour, so its vital that you remain hydrated.

If you’re working in the direct sun, make sure you take a regular number of breaks for a long enough period in the shade.

Also ensure you’re skin is protected with sunblock and loose, light clothing.

Once you’ve taken all the necessary precautions, keep an eye  out for any of the symptoms of heat illness.
