SafeWork NSW Waives 5 Day Asbestos Removal Work Notification Timeframe

SafeWork NSW recently waived the 5 day asbestos removal work notification timeframe to allow for the immediate clean-up of asbestos debris following bushfires.

Usually the 5 day timeframe allows SafeWork to determine the adequacy of safety systems and site arrangements however assessments are being fast tracked in order to have fire damaged asbestos removed as soon as possible.

SafeWork said residents should seek out information on the potential risks of being exposed to asbestos and how to safely manage asbestos when undertaking bushfire clean-ups.

Residents are reminded to

  • not disturb asbestos materials
  • keep asbestos debris wet until it is removed
  • use a qualified asbestos removalist licensed by SafeWork when removing asbestos
