Roadworkers in New Zealand Down Tools to Reflect on Health and Safety

New Zealand roadworkers have temporarily downed tools in an attempt to bring attention to health and safety after 4 workplace fatalities in February, the NZ Transport Agency said in a statement.

The “Pause for Health and Safety Day” involved workers pausing work from 8am to 12pm, highlighting the need to eradicate workplace accidents and focus on creating safer working environments for the construction industry.

The fatalities impacted not only the families, friends, colleagues and communities but the wider construction community, NZTA general manager of safety, health and environment Greg Lazzaro said.

He said the practice of downing tools was to refocus people on health and safety.
