Queensland Health and Safety Video Highlights Construction Industry Risk of Falls

A video by Queensland Health and Safety Authority attempts to highlight the risks involved with working from heights, particularly in the construction industry.

The video tells the story of an experienced worker, Jed who was working in the construction industry for more than 19 years when he fell 5 meters down from a bridge. The fall resulted in a severe back injury, leaving the worker in severe emotional and physical pain as well as costing him financially, almost resulting in financial ruin.

I find the video particularly beneficial because hearing about hazards from the point of view of a worker is better than being lectured to about the importance of safety. With a video we are able to actually see the consequences of workplace safety incidents and as the saying goes “seeing is believing”.

Two things that this video makes perfectly clear is that all work from heights presents a hazard, particularly if the risk of falling is more than 2 metres and therefore needs to be managed accordingly. But it also highlights the need for safety and training even among the most experienced workers. Watch the video and see for yourself.
