Put Safety First in the Lead-up to Christmas

WorkCover Queensland has reminded all employers to pay attention to the safety of their employees in the lead-up to Christmas, particularly given that during this time of the year, injury claims tend to rise.

According to WorkCover Queensland Executive – Priority Industries, Barbara Martin people tend to rush to get everything done before the Christmas holiday. Combine this rushing with the fact that most people are already worn out after a busy year and it can lead to disaster. People tend to lose concentration and make mistakes which can lead to accidents and injuries.

The spike in claims is usually associated with preventable accidents like falls from ladders, and slips, trips and falls.

Employers have also been warned that when hiring temporary workers over this period, they must receive full safety inductions and training, particularly when working with machinery.  Just because they are hired for a specific purpose for a limited time, does not mean they shouldn’t receive the necessary safety training.
