Possible Asbestos Risks of WA Government Construction Recycling Scheme

While the government has been encouraging the use of recycled building materials, there have been concerns about the safety of such practices given that asbestos could be present and released during the demolition process.

The state government has offered local governments a $10million incentive to reuse construction waste for civil projects however there is the possibility that construction waste from older buildings may still contain asbestos fibres which can be released during demolition.

The government encourages the use of recycled products rather than allowing it to make its way to landfills but asbestos fibres can be released during the concrete crushing process, posing a risk to workers and the public.
