A horrible accident has taken place inside Perth’s new airport rail tunnel, leaving a construction worker fighting for his life.
A 35 year old construction worker suffered major facial injuries after a high pressure air pipe exploded and hit him in the face at the massive site recently.
The man was 50 metres below ground at the time of the incident, which complicated the rescue operation.
Emergency crews managed to lift the man out of the rail tunnel by crane with a rescue cage. He was then rushed to Royal Perth Hospital.
Work on the site was shut down for the day as WorkSafe and Perth Transport Authority investigated.
Following the accident, the CFMEU came out with claims that concerns had been raised about the safety of the brackets connected to the high pressure pipes before the incident occurred.
Graham Pallot on behalf of the union said calls for a safety review were ignored.
