A horrific construction accident has taken place on a Melbourne construction site resulting in the death of a worker and two more being injured.

Paramedics were called to the scene to find 2 men submerged and trapped in concrete after a container fell on top of them from a crane at a site in Box Hill.

Paramedics raced to free the trapped men but one died on the scene and another was seriously injured. The man who died had been struck by the falling object in addition to being partially submerged in the concrete.

His injuries included extensive damage to his head, chest, abdomen and internal bleeding as well as fractures.

The incident resulted in a major spotlight being placed on cranes in Victoria including an audit of the cranes from the same distributor.
