October is National Safe Work Month, a month to observe workplace health and safety – an initiative started by Safe Work Australia in 2008. It was originally planned to develop national policy and guidance for workplace health and safety and workers’ compensation.
Safe Work has since been running campaigns nationally to raise awareness about safety in the workplace.
Safe Work Australia says that since its inception there has been a steady decline in the rate of work-related fatalities and workers’ compensation claims.
Despite the decline in fatalities, workplace injuries and illnesses cost the community $61.8 billion annually.
Safe Work is asking that in October, workers and employers commit to a safer and healthier workplace for all Australians.
