A man and woman have been arrested after an investigation revealed that they were the ringleaders behind a scheme issuing fake construction industry trade qualifications to unqualified people for a fee since 2015.
The 55 year old man and his 52 year old wife were extradited to NSW and charged after issuing fraudulent trade certificates for building, electrotechnology, gas fitting, air-conditioning and refrigeration trades.
Investigators believe hundreds of fake qualifications were issued through the scheme, in effect releasing an alarming number of unqualified people on construction sites around Sydney.
Nine people were arrested in relation to the scheme but the husband and wife duo are thought to be the ringleaders. They were both charged with multiple offences including making false documents to influence the exercise of public duty, dealing with $125,000 in proceeds of crime and participating in a criminal group. The pair spent Christmas behind bars as a result.
