Health Minister Supports Review on Silicosis

During the recent COAG meeting, Health Minister Greg Hunt revealed that the federal government would be supporting further steps for a national registry on silicosis.

Reports say the government plans to get Safe Work Australia and medical experts to commence a national registry on silicosis.

Mr Hunt stressed the importance of swift action to protect patients and families.

The government intends to write to Safe Work Australia immediately to ensure standards are implemented and a review of existing state laws and standards is undertaken.

Workplace Health and Safety Queensland recently issued a warning on the risks of exposure to respirable crystalline silica for workers in engineered stone benchtop manufacturing, finishing and installation industries.

Pneumoconioses, which is a progressive and irreversible lung disease is caused by prolonged exposure to respirable crystalline silica, quartz, and coal dust, with no known cure. In the case of this disease prevention is crucial.
