Young workers are a particularly vulnerable group of the workforce which is why a joint blitz was organised recently by WorkSafe Victoria and SafeWork NSW to focus on keeping them safe and reducing potentially fatal workplace falls – another major source of concern in the Albury Wodonga region.
The inspections took place between March 25 and 29.
Falls are the leading cause of serious injury and death for construction workers, of all ages. According to WorkSafe Victoria, there were 5 fatalities due to falls on construction sites in the past 2 years.
WorkSafe said the operation was an opportunity for construction employers in the region to take stock of the safety measures in place to protect construction workers.
The first step in ensuring young people on site are safe is ensuring they have received all the necessary safety training. The White Card course is mandatory for everyone on a construction site to ensure they know how to safely work in the construction industry. Employers also need to ensure that these workers have been properly training on site specific and task specific safety, and that they are adequately supervised.
