The risks involved with movement of heavy materials and equipment has been highlighted by WorkSafe following the fining and conviction of a Brooklyn company over an incident in 2015 which resulted in one worker losing 3 toes.
The company was fined $50,000 without conviction and ordered to pay costs of $29,000 as a result of the incident. The stone weighing 182kg fell on the worker’s foot when it was being lifted using an overhead jib crane.
The company was found guilty of 2 offences relating to failure to provide or maintain a safe system of work and failure to provide training to employees to enable them to perform the work in a safe way , without risks to health.
The worker had not received formal training for using the jib crane.
