An excavator incident prompted a safety alert from WorkSafe New Zealand, on managing ground instability hazards.
The incident that led to the alert involved an excavator operator excavating coal when a rock fall took place. The excavator was struck and the operator who was in the cab at the time was injured.
The incident is currently under investigation.
WorkSafe urged companies to ensure effective controls are in place to manage ground instability hazards.
They also reminded companies and workers that critical risk controls must be understood and applied or everyone’s safety would be at risk.
