WorkSafe New Zealand has warned the construction sector that workers injured due to risks involved with working from heights will never be acceptable, given that these risks are so well known.
The safety authority recently sentenced a company after a worker fell from a roof with no edge protection through a glass table onto concrete. WorkSafe said 2 workers were on the roof and exposed to the risk of a fall at the time.
The investigation revealed that the company failed to identify the risk of a fall, failed to implement fall protection and failed to ensure workers were trained and instructed on work from height. The company received a conviction and $50,000 fine and was ordered to pay $20,000 reparation to the victim.
