With dwelling commencements recording a 15.6 per cent rise year to year, activity in the construction sector is looking good. In fact commencements are at an all time high.
There is one issue that threatens to put a spoke in the works – the lack of apprentices and construction tradespeople.
A report recently showed that 2.7 per cent of Australian workers were employed as an apprentice or trainee as at December 2014, compared with 3.3 per cent in 2013, indicating a significant decline.
There are a number of reasons for this decline but we need to look at ways to recruit young people to be trained in the construction trades. Read more about the problem here.
