Company Fined over Botched Demolition

A Canberra company has been fined over a botched demolition of a house in August 2015.

The earth-moving company had to pay a $60,000 fine due to a breach which resulted in the release of dust because of insufficient water suppression. The dust impacted workers and a WorkSafe ACT inspector.

The company recently pleaded guilty to failing to provide a safe working environment because it failed to ensure adequate water suppression before the demolition began. It also failed to ensure effective means of communication between excavator operators and ground workers.

The company was originally convicted and fined $80,000 by the Industrial Magistrate however the fine was reduced to $60,000.
