Following the deaths of 2 workers in Ballarat last year, who died when a trench they were working in collapsed, the civil construction company involved has been charged.

The company was charged for failing to maintain battering or benching of the excavation and to use trench shields and manhole cages to protect workers from the risk of engulfment as well as failing to provide supervision to ensure workers did not perform work in the trench without the necessary precautions.

The 2 workers were laying pipes at a housing development in Ballarat in March 2018 when the fatal accident occurred. One worker, a 34 year old man died on the scene and a 21 year old was buried up to his waist, he was transported to hospital where he died a short while later.
