Canberra Heatwave a Threat to Construction Workers

If you live in Canberra and noticed an increase in temperatures over the month of January, you’re right. According to meteorologists, temperatures in January are higher than usual for the month and the hottest day on record was 39.6 degrees.

If you’re an outdoor worker you don’t have the privilege of air-conditioning so it’s important to take the necessary precautions to avoid heat stress.

Some of the basic things you can do is stay hydrated. Drink water often and take breaks in the shade throughout the day.

Avoid strenuous work in the direct sunlight during the hottest parts of the day and make sure workers are operating in shifts so that no particular person is working in the sun all day by themselves.

It’s also important to wear sunblock with a high SPF and light weight, loose fitting clothing.
