New bricks have been designed to suck the pollution out of the air like a vacuum.
The Breathe Brick developed by Carmen Trudell, an assistant professor at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo’s school of architecture was designed to form a part of a building’s regular ventilation system.
The special Breathe bricks form part of a double layered facade, with the special bricks on the outside and a layer of standard bricks on the inside forming the insulation. Similar to a vacuum cleaner, the Breathe Brick system separates out the heavy pollutant particles from the air and drops them into a removable hopper at the base of the wall.
