Brittle and Fragile Roof Materials a Cause for Concern

Are you sure that your company is operating in accordance with relevant regulations and codes of practice when it comes to work on or near brittle or fragile roofing materials?

Employers were recently reminded by WorkSafe WA to consider the hazards of working around brittle roofing materials because of the risk of falling.

WorkSafe WA Commissioner Lex McCulloch said the state’s Occupational Safety and Health Regulations 1996 have prescriptive requirements concerning working at heights, including identifying fall hazards such as brittle or fragile roofing materials.

Where brittle and fragile roofing materials form part of a roof, those accessing it should be informed, this includes those carrying out construction work. They should also be given a safe system of work and training about the safety system of work to be used.
